Introduction & Role of CRPF

The Central Reserve Police Force ( crpf long form) came into existence as an official of the crown on 27th July 1939. It was renamed an official part of the Central Reserve Police Force on enactment of the CRPF Act on 28th December 1949. It's completed 81 glorious years of wonderful history.

The Force has grown into a large organization, with 246 Bns, (including the executive Bns 208, 6 Mahila Bns 15 RAF Bns 10 CoBRA Bns, 5, Signal Bns, and 1 Special Duty Group, 1 Parliament Duty Group Special Duty Group, 1 Parliament Duty Group), 43Group Centres 20 Training Institutions, 3 CWS 7 AWS, 3 MWS/SWS, 4 Composite Hospitals of 100 bed and 18 Composite Hospitals with 50 beds.

This is All India in character, both in its deployment and its composition. Due to its unique capability to swiftly adapt to a variety of situations, and working in perfect in perfect harmony together with State Police, CRPF has, over the years, gained the reputation of being possibly the most admired Force among the public as well as the State administrations.

The wide range of duties that the CRPF are

Apart from Apart from Law and Order and counter insurgency tasks, the contribution of CRPF as a force in General Elections, held repeatedly over the last few years, has been very important and vital. It is especiallytrue for the trouble torn States of J&K, Bihar and States of NorthEast. During the Parliamentary elections & State Assembly Election The CRPF played a key role in the security arrangements.

One of the major responsibilities for the CRPF, which isn't well understood is to guard vital Central Govt. structures like Airport, Powerhouses, Bridges, Doordarshan Kendras, All India Radio Stations, where the residences of Governersand Chief Ministers, Nationalised banks, and other Government establishments in insurgency affected States. The CRPF is responsible for ensuring the security and security of Democratic Institutions, and preventing the control of civil society by the militants in these troubled areas. The CRPF's contribution, even though it is not widely visible however, is vital.

7.5 percent of the Force is deployed for the security of VIPs mainly within the North-Eastern States, J&K, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh which include Governors Chief Ministers MSP, Ministers, and MsLA of J&K Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur as well as Nagaland, Tripura and Mizoram. CRPF is also providing security (Static guard) in the offices of the President of India and various Union Ministers and MsP as well as other high-ranking officials.

17.5 percent of the force is entrusted with guarding the crucial infrastructure for the Central and State Govts mostly within areas affected by insurgency. This includes Secretariats Doordarshan Kendras and Secretariats Telephoneexchanges, Banks, Hydroelectric projects, Jails and more. CRPF is also entrusted with the protection of Parliament House.

10 Coys from the CRPF are deployed for the protection of three shrines that are sensitive i.e. Krishna Janma Bhoomi, Shahi Idgah Masjidcomplex (Mathura), Ram Janma Bhoomi- Barbi Masjid complex (Ayodhya) and Kashi Vishwanath Temple- Gyanvapi Mosque(Varanasi). Four Coys of the Force are assigned for the security of Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, Katra, Jammu (J&K).

Security Activities

Central Reserve Police Force is the largest Central Armed Police Force of India and boasts an enthralling past as well as an exciting present.The history is replete with innumerable "SAGAs OF BRAVERY" which are inspirational and serve as guiding policies for this force.Since the beginning of its existence at the time of 1939, it has travelled a long way from providing assistance to the fusion of the small Princely States into Indian Union and handling of the Partition riots. The force is now engaged in an entire guerrilla conflict in the Maoist zone of conflict. The CRPF has had to fight numerous battles and stood along with the Army in times of war. Ten brave soldiers from CRPF became martyrs as Chinese soldiers invaded Indian Territory and attacked its patrol at Hot springs (Laddakh) on 21 Oct 1959.Two CRPF companies deployed at Sardar Post in Kutch repulsed an attack by an army brigade from the Pakistan Army on 9th April 1965. The Sardar Post battle is considered to be the greatest battle ever to be fought in the history of Police forces. In the internal security front it foiled Parliament attack on 13 December 2001, and Ayodhya attack on the 27th of July 2005.

CRPF was also a key part in the eradication of militancy Punjab in the 1980s and the insurgency in Tripura during 1990s. In 2001, following the recommendations of the Ministerial Group, CRPF was declared the main internal security force in the nation. Today,more than one third of the force's personnel are deployed in left wing extremist affected areas to curb left-wing extremism. The CRPF has played a huge role in eliminating the naxalism from West Bengal and from Kaimur and Rohtas regions in Bihar. The naxals were wiped out from Saranda forest in Jharkhand which was a major base for their activities. Despite scattered deployments CRPF neutralized top maoist chief Kishanji in 2011 and then made important forays into liberated naxal regions like Saranda ( during 2011),Maad (in 2012) as well as the Cut-off region (in 2012.), Burha Pahad (in 2012), Silger & Pedia (in 2013).

CRPF also carried out the rescue and relief efforts during various natural disasters like Orissa Super Cyclone (1999), Gujarat Earthquake (2001), Tsunami (2004) and J&K Earthquake (2005). CRPF has proven its strength through several overseas UNdeployments such as Srilanka (1987), Haiti (1995), Kosovo (2000) and Liberia (Women Contingent) (2007) also.
